By law the Government must review the minimum wage rates every year. As a result, from 1 April 2022 minimum wage rates will be rising to be:
- Adult — $21.20 an hour - applies to all employees aged 16 and over who aren’t starting-out workers or trainees, and all employees who are involved in supervising or training other employees.
- Starting-out — $16.96 an hour - applies solely to workers aged between 16 and 19 and who are entering the workforce for the first time.
- Training — $16.96 an hour - applies to employees aged 20 years or over who are completing recognised industry training involving at least 60 credits in order to become qualified.
You'll need to assess if any of your employees are currently on minimum wage and agree with then on a new rate above the minimum rates. If any workers are on starting-out or training wages, it is a good opportunity to check when they’ll be eligible to move onto the adult rate.
